Description:

The Pirot kilims are characterised by variety of motifs (zoomorphic, anthropomorphic and motifs of surrounding objects and phenomena) that derive their names from associations to objects and living beings found in immediate surroundings. A small kilim, with a place and year of making woven in Cyrillic letters in the upper part – PIROT 1941 g., is conceived as an embroidery sampler and decorated with a large, almost encyclopaedic span of ornaments. The ornaments are arranged into friezes, boxes and within the border. The colours used are: red, blue, green, white, orange, black, yellow and brown. Among the ornaments and patterns represented on the kilim there are: bombs (bombe) and bibice, wreath (venac) and devil’s knees (vraško koleno), Crown Prince (prestolonaslednik), tables (sofrice), chair (stolica), bird (tiče), pomegranates (narovi), flames (plamenovi), turtle (kornjača) etc.
