Description:

Landscape verdure tapestries with hunting scenes were often woven in Flemish workshops. Central scene of this tapestry shows a company of noblemen and ladies hunting in a hilly landscape. In the foreground, hunters on horseback and on foot, with the help of dogs, hunt the water birds. Landscape is a characteristic feature of Flemish tapestries and an important mean of figural compositions structure, especially in the scenes of battles and hunt. The figures in the scene are dressed according to the fashion of the late 16th and early 17th century. A border is framed both on the outside and the inside by the strips filled with a flower vine. Outer strip on the lower side is missing. The border is filled with balustrades and pavilions, formed by the use of columns, surrounded by vases with floral arrangements and grotesque motifs. The figural motifs on the upper and lower side of the border are identical, while the motifs along lateral sides of the border are different, but symmetrically distributed.
